What is Access Now?
The greater Richmond area has a vast network of safety-net health clinics
serving the primary care needs of the uninsured. These patients often also need the care of a specialist to diagnose and treat their complex health issues. When directors of local safety net clinics approached the Richmond Academy of Medicine with requests to expand their network of specialists to meet this need, the response was the development of Access Now. In January 2008, Access Now began operations, providing access to specialists so that no patient would go without care for lack of a willing provider. More than 835 specialists and physician extenders open their doors to treat patients referred by Access Now.
The staff and board of directors of Access Now are dedicated to providing quality coordination of health care for patients, physicians and clinics we serve.
- Partnering with 22 safety net clinics, Access Now’s physician volunteers have provided specialty medical care for more than 16,170 residents of Greater Richmond who are disadvantaged and lack health insurance
- Physician volunteers have donated uncompensated care valued at more than $32.3 million.
- Over 835 specialists provide care, representing at 121 medical practices and in two hospital systems
| “They were able to make me feel safe, respected and that everything that could be done, was being done for me.”
