“I Don’t Want any Tubes”: Understanding Intubation and Breathing Decisions
Tracheotomy, ventilator, intubation… words often misunderstood or feared by patients. In the second of six bimonthly learning sessions for 2020, join Honoring Choices and esteemed physician, Ritsu Kuno, MD, CPI, from Pulmonary Associates of Richmond, as we explore the true medical meaning of words and phrases often used, and misused, by participants in ACP conversations. Come and explore ways to help our patients better understand intubation and other breathings decisions they could face.
- Explore what patients might mean by the comment “I don’t want any tubes” and how we can support them in understanding and incorporating their values into their advance care planning
- Be able to describe respiratory medical interventions and their outcomes, especially to ACP conversation participants
- Discover patient resources around these interventions
More on our presenter: Ritsu Kuno MD, CPI, has been on the team of physicians at Pulmonary Associates of Richmond since 1998. His medical interests include critical care medicine, COPD, and bronchiectasis. He earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina, completed his residency at the Medical College of Virginia – Internal Medicine, and his fellowship at Emory University – Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease, and Critical Care Medicine. He is a member of the American College of Chest Physicians, American Thoracic Society, Society of Critical Care Medicine, and Richmond Academy of Medicine. Dr. Kuno currently serves as the Vice Chair of the HCV Board of Directors.
