“Don’t Take My Eyes”: Understanding Anatomical Gifts

In the third of six bimonthly learning sessions for 2020, join Honoring Choices and guest speakers Patti Dean, LifeNet Health, and Rick Sikon, Virginia State Anatomical Program of the Virginia Department of Health, as we hear from the experts about the intricacies of anatomical gift decision-making. Bring your questions and connect with your colleagues as we seek to further our expertise in this critical area of advance care planning.

Goals:

  • Understand the different options for anatomical gifts on the Virginia Advance Medical Directive and how to explain them to patients and conversation participants
  • Understand the difference between whole body donation and organ donation
  • Explore religious, cultural, and spiritual beliefs around organ donation

More on our presenters:

Patti Dean is Community Education Coordinator for LifeNet Health, the organ procurement organization that serves Richmond. Patti educates individuals in workplaces, schools, churches, and other venues on the importance of making an informed decision about organ and tissue donation.

Rick Sikon is the Operational Director of the Virginia State Anatomical Program (VSAP) at the Virginia Department of Health. VSAP provides Virginians with an opportunity to choose whole body donation for study and research in medical science in a dignified, respectful and professional manner.
