In 1820, a small group of Richmond and Manchester physicians who met "at candle light” on the third Saturday of each month started a local medical society under the misleading name of The Medical Society of Virginia. They fought against rampant quackery, epidemics of small pox, influenza, and yellow fever. These early pioneers established the standards for the medical profession in Virginia. Their efforts paved the way for the creation of vibrant local medical societies across Virginia. Today, we are the Richmond Academy of Medicine.
Although the practice of medicine today bears little resemblance to 1820, ironically, so many of yesterday’s challenges are still with us today. The Academy serves more than 2,400 area healthcare professionals who live in the Greater Richmond Metro area. Many work in hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, public health agencies, nursing homes, and health related businesses. Over 1,000 members are independent practitioners representing 278 community based private practices in 47 different specialty areas. With sustaining membership partnerships with Bon Secours Health System, the Hospital Corporation of America, Central Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University, the Academy continues as the strong and vibrant voice for Richmond area physicians.
We are dedicated to serving our members and the greater community through comprehensive programs that include legislative, regulatory, economic and social advocacy for patients and physicians. We are here to provide the necessary support, so that the Richmond area continues to be a great place to live, receive healthcare and practice medicine.
